Crisco...the hidden beauty product
By moonfairy
surprise moisturizer
Get ready folks: I'm coming out of the closet! I can't hide this anymore. I even came clean to my husband. I never saw him laugh so hard and I don't think I've ever felt sillier, except for maybe the time when....oh never mind, that's behind me now. Anyways, the truth is the truth, so here goes:
I was sipping my coffee one morning watching "Good Morning America" and this one morning there was a beauty segment. I'm pretty sure it was Robin Roberts interviewing some beauty products person and she was showcasing all different creams and lotions for dry skin. Robin looked a little worried when the woman came to a container of Crisco shortening. "Really??" she asked, and actually seemed to back away from the can like it was a snake ready to strike.
"Yes, really!!" the woman replied. I listened with skepticism while she touted its exploits but the squeeky wheels of curiousity began to chug a lug in my brain.
So.....when I went to the market and purchased a can. I drove home giddy with hope. I had just bought a 16 ounce can of shortening for maybe $2.00 and if this stuff actually worked, then I might have well just won the lottery.
I put it to the test as soon as I snuck past my husband, hiding the bag behind my back, and ran to the bathroom. The results?
A!!!
I tried it on my elbows, heels and hands and the results were instant and effective. Oh joy!!!!My skin became soft on contact!!! And the best part is it lasts all day! I do want to say that I pumice my heels every other day and always put a lotion on them after my shower...so they're in pretty good shape. I realize that some people's heels might be more of a challenge, but with a little work you too can have soft, supple heels =)
Can I tell you how excited I was?? I like the word inexpensive....cheap is even better...and this stuff is cheap! And the 16 ounce can will last oh so long. But there's more......The next test came about a week later...
Hmmm, I thought to myself as I scooped up the last drop of under eye treatment with my little finger. The blue container of Crisco with the Betty Crocker-like picture of way too fattening desserts was perched on the corner of the bathroom sink. I eyed it suspiciously, wondering if this could possibly take the place of my expensive eye cream. Can't hurt and maybe it will help....so I lifted the plastic lid and dipped my pinkie in it....barely. What's that Brill Cream ad say?? "A little dab will do ya"?
yup...just a dab. I patted just a little under each eye and put the leftover on my lips...and to my delight it did not disappoint; my under eye area and lips became soft instantly and remained that way all day.
Mind you, this stuff is rich so you only need a little bit......but IT WORKS!!!!
The ingredients read like this:
soybean oil, fully hydrogenated palm oil, partially hydrogenated palm and soybean oils, mono and diglycerides, TBHQ and citric acid (antioxidants). That's it...simple ingredients with very nice results. I'm not trying to say that it will erase wrinkles and age spots and things like that, but I do know for a fact that it's a fantastic moisturizer...
Try it. You won't be disappointed. You have my word on that.
Yes, Crisco all vegetable shortening. It's weird, I know.

you are so welcome, svelt sista! thanks for the comment!
Great hub! I have read about this before but have never tried it. Thanks for the useful information as with winter weather my skin tends to be on the dry side and now would be a good time to try it. Thank you too for sharing!
Voted useful!
thank you wwolfs!! Ever since I saw it on GMA I've been using it. Remember, a little goes a long way!! It's especially nice on my under eyes and on my hands, especially in the winter.
Oh my goodness-What a gem of a hub I have stumbled on today. Thanks for testing out the Crisco and sharing it with us. I am a believer!!! :-) P.S.-I hit every button and shared it and tweeted it.
That is so cool, thanks for sharing! I've heard there are so many natural treatments, it's not even funny. LOL.
Ha Ha yes I heard about this in one of my Human Service classes, I guess some social worker didn't understand and took and African American to a doctor for his/her dry skin. Nothing would work, and than when she finally asked the grandmother, she said, well all you needed was Crisco. I guess it is something used among there culture and very good stuff from what I've always heard. I've never had to much of dry skin myself, but thanks for sharing! :)
How neat to be able to use Crisco as a moisturizer! I like the idea of "cheap", too1 You may have started a new trend among Hubbers, and we'll be sure to tell the world! LOL. Voted up!
I can't even remember the last time I bought Crisco! But I will now!
You've inspired me to give it a try!
Terrific! Thanks tons. I will tell my friends about this too. I know things like this often work very well, like tea bags for hair color.
Sometimes the simplest, inexpensive, "older" products work really well. Crisco as a skin softener would also be great for people who are allergic to perfumes and color additives. Great suggestion . :) Thanks for SHARING.
My favorite? CORNSTARCH!!! Yes, the kind we cook with. It is incredibly pure, very cheap, hypoallergenic, and CORNSTARCH makes a wonderful adult powder or non-irritating baby powder.
Pour CORNSTARCH into an empty "expensive powder" box. :)
thanks everyone for your comments...I enjoyed reading all of them!!!! FYI- I put a dab under my eyes this morning at about 6:15. It's now 5:15 pm and my under eyes are still soft =) It's amazing!!!
This is so creative! I am open to trying things like this. Right now I only have butter flavored Crisco. I will get some of the regular kind. I have heard of people using it to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. Thanks for sharing!
I've heard of this before, but never tried it. Thanks for the test results! I have used olive oil and also like Pond's cold cream, which reminds me of Crisco. It's great to find cheap alternatives that work just as well! Great hub.
thanks for the comment catgypsy! It does work great and the best part is that it's cheap!!
WHAT! I cannot wait to try this. I love tips like this and the cheaper, the better. Way to go! Voted up and useful.
when I saw this I was like "No freakin way that could be used as a beauty product." but apparently it can so i I may have to try this thing out thanks for the tip...voted up and also useful :)
thanks theclevercat and LunesisMidnight! I've been using Crisco for about 6 months now and haven't deviated back to other products...I really do like it!!
Ha ha! Known this for years but will go you one better. I am a lotion maker and I use it! Yep! You know the old saying about the mechanic's wife who's car is always breaking down? Well I'm always running out of lotion! So I grab the crisco... Except to avoid questions n comments I put some in a fancy jar and set that in my bathroom! It's my little secret-well now it's everyones little secret.
that's awesome iowamoon!!! thanks for sharing!
How awesome moonfairy! I had no idea you could use this as a moisturizer, the one I use on my face is about 35 dollars, so ridiculous! So I will be using this more often I'm glad you decided to share your secret:) I voted up and interesting! I would vote up a billion times if I could this hub is great! Keep up the great work :))
thanks so much kayyluh =)I'm glad I decided to share as well, I've gotten such great feedback! Feel free to let me know what you think once you've tried it!
50 years ago my Russian ballet teacher shared with my mother that she used Crisco as her skin cream. She also taught her to do a facial exercise she called "the pussycat" where you purse your lips firmly so your cheeks pop out. It works. People are always asking me how I keep my 60+ skin looking so young.
awesome...I use it every day and I swear by it. thanks for sharing Lilleyth.
What a great idea! Funny too, we have been out of Crisco for months and I just asked my husband to pick up a can today! Ummm, it may be beauty treatment night! Great Hub moonfairy.
sounds like synchronicity to me!! thanks for the comment duffsmom =)
How along are you supposed to have it on your skin?
as long as you want. I dab a smidge of it under my eyes and gently rub it in and I also rub some in around my lips and then leave it until I wash my face. I used it on my hands the other day. I massaged it in and just used a paper towel to dry my palms.
I heard the woman in the movie "The Help" mention Crisco's
usages. So just to try it out, I bought a one pound container. I could not believe how "instantaneously my skin not only felt good, but looked good. I put it on my feet, which needed the most help. I am sold on it and will see other uses for it.
fantastic Love Roschelle!!!! I'm glad you decided to give it a try =)
I also heard the movie "The Help" mention this also. I just bought it!
Awesome Rebecca, thanks for commenting!

Thanks for the tip! I didn't have to go out and buy Crisco, as I use it for baking all the time, so I had a huge tub of it in the kitchen. I tried it right away, as you did. This is priceless information since face creams and hand lotions are sooo expensive. Crisco now has a new home... in the bathroom with the beauty products. Thanks again!
